Understanding begins at home
By Mindles H. Dreck

I've been intrigued to listen to liberal reactions to the election:

Nick Kristof says the Democrats need to reach out to voters in the Midwest and get in touch with religious values.

Jeanine Garofolo says she wants the "Archie Bunkers in the cracker belt to feel pain"

Hendrik Hertzberg wants to know why he is demonized by these red-staters as the liberal elite.

Garry Willis in todays NYT bemoans the "fundamentalism of the american electorate', calls this a "jihad" by 'moral zealots', compares the U.S. to fundamentalist Islam (oy) and bemoans the end of enlightement. (NYT server is down right now).

Thomas Friedman, also in today's NYT, focuses on Christian Fundamentalists as well

My neighbour, famous for saying the Northeast and West Coast should secede and form a separate country, keeps saying "it's the Christians, the Christians!". This from a strict Catholic.

Then there's the comment threads in Glenn's Guardian article....yeesh. It's sad enough to see Americans making jokes about incest in the South, but just mortifying when a purported Brit does it.
