"understanding evolution does not suggest that humanity ought to pursue internecine slaughter and elimination."

Evolution does not result in any "ought" at all, either positive or negative. In fact if evolution is true then there are no transcendent ethics that we "OUGHT" to or are obligated to follow. Therefore people are ethically free to do whatever they find advantageous. Interestingly Darwin did not come home with passionate conclusions regarding sharks or birds.

"He returned to England in 1836 with no answer (though he had come to passionate conclusions regarding Negro slavery, which he had witnessed in the Americas and which he detested with all the fire of a gentle, humanitarian soul)."

His humanitarian WHAT? Another case of trying to sneak Transcendence into a godless world. This illustrates my point exactly. You want to keep the ethical guidelines you happen to like at the moment but then claim no such transcendent ethics exist the very moment that they begin to encroach on your own lifestyle. Sleeping with unmarried Women etc etc.

I noticed that you did not address Nietzsche. It was not Bibles that Hitler handed out to his friends to read, instead it was Nietzsche. Nietzsche took Darwin to his logical conclusion; something you (to your credit) are unable to do. You still have the ethical image of God impressed in your Soul. That will have to go if you want to be consistent and logical.
