That would probably be a good idea for them. A moderate who has some chance to get something from the South, and who might not be the favorite candidate of places like Mass., VT or DC but would win them over any Republican. If Warner ran a good campaign he might win FL, perhaps VA, and even if he doesn't win other southern states he might make the Republicans use resources to fight him off in the South. Of course this all depends on who the Republican candidate is and how well he campaigns.
