If Fitzgerald had not become fed up with his own Republican Party in Illinois along with the Daley Democratic Machine in Chicago, neither of which gave him the support that he deserved, he would not have given up his Senate seat. He was just sick and tired of fighting the same old wars and the same old people with the same old tools. He was too independent for the precinct pols and the city and state apparatchinks who tried to control him.

So he said thanks but no thanks.

Had Fitzgerald run for reelection, Obama would still be a local politician looking for a larger stage for his song and dance routine.
