From a fundamental standpoint, good progress has been made in programs which, in part, evolved out of the human genome project. In general, many biochemical pathways have been identified and associated with disease mechanisms. Exploration of the relevance of many of these pathways utilizing various strategies (antibodies/protein, small molecule inhibitors, even antisense) has had enough time to begin to reach a more mature level. I'm confident that some of this work will bare fruit, in the form of clinical relevance (ie druggable candidates with commercial viability).
