however, I don't think that is a valid argument for keeping EC system...

As you mention, let's look at Florida in 2000.
I think that's precisely why we NEED direct popular vote.

BECAUSE we had EC system, those few thousand fraud vote matters so much. Those few thousand vote could decided the vote of few million! Now THAT's a real fraud.

If we had direct vote, those few thousand illegal vote would NOT have affected much in election outcome.

If you worry about illegal voting, all we need to do is check valid identification such as drivers license or passport.

I think having an EC system actually magnifies the fraud not minimize...
