Rudy Guiliani and Ed Koch supported Bush. New Yorkers are not hopeless. But the two dominant ethnic groups, Jews and blacks, skew heavily towards Democrats. (By themselves, they represent almost half of New Yorkers). In the case of blacks, it is a result of becoming heavily embedded in the New Deal coalition, and counting on the Federal government for relief from discrimination. For Jews, it is a matter of immigration demographics: those who came to the United States were more likely to be within the socialist spectrum, and therefore to have passed on "progressivism" to their descendants. Add in Hispanics and Asians, both of whom tend to skew Democratic, as more economically and socially vulnerable groups, and you have most of the Kerry vote in New York, remembering that he would get some of the remaining groups, such as Italians and Irish.
