For Jews I think the long tradition of the right being anti-semitic has a lot to do with it. The left always fought to stop discrimination. The closed clubs, College quotas, jobs, etc, were always perceived as being Republican. The dislike on the left for Israel has a lot of anti-semitism in it now, but the right is still the whipping boy on this issue.
