If I was creating the system now I probably wouldn't include the EC. But I don't think its such a grievous problem that it deserves an enormous push for change. Also since the majority of states benefit from it and because it helps out big parties vs. small parties (and big parties have the political power), and since you need supermajorities to get a constitutional amendment I don't think it will change.
