I commend you to Sherlock Holmes:

When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

In "The Case of the Missing Votes," we can eliminate rigged machines as an impossible explanation, since the discrepancies were spread across numerous counties which employed differing voting devices and methods.

Having eliminated the impossible, what remains are the exit polls. These were the culprits. The exit polls were badly off base. Given that the polls were skewed uniformly in exaggerating the Kerry vote, we can further deduce that this was no accident or random event, but rather a deliberate attempt to show Kerry as the winner. The motive was to discourage Bush votes, inasmuch as the polls were still open.

Elementary, my dear Watson.
