I live in Florida and I can easily explain why registered Democrats here voted for Bush. Many of these voters registered as Democrats years ago when Florida and most of the south was "single party" (Democrat) and very conservative. As recently as a decade ago in most parts of the rural south being Democrat was anything but "liberal".

Another Florida election myth from the 2000 election is the reports that state troopers and local cops put up roadblocks to deter voting. There is a grain of truth to this much repeated tale and it is this: In Florida State law requires that police roadblocks for drivers license checks be announced in advance in the local newspapers, but exception is made for ELECTION DAY and declared emergencies. So on election day the cops run wild and put up unannounced roadblocks everywhere hoping to reel in a few drunks and dopers. I know, I live here and watched it myself and have officer friends who think the big stink about their election day drunk driver dragnet is funny as hell. And they DO catch a bunch of drunks on election day.
