I believe the government should establish a formulary for all subsidized programs and purchase those drugs at a negotiated discount. The formulary could be changed from time to time, but it would be nearly all generic drugs. Most "new" drugs are nothing more than a slightly changed formula , like time release etc that allow them to charge for R&D again for the same drug with the same affect.

There are definitely ways to cut drug prices severely with similar generics. I mean drugs with the exact affect, just not with a costumed formula change. Doctors need to cooperate more fully and payola to doctors prescribing certain "new" drugs be more critically investigated and prosecuted.

I was once tipped by a Pharmacist friend that worked in a state institution about the payola game. We all see them in the doctor's office waiting room. I was able to nail the salesman and the former Pharmacist for rigging purchases and prices. Lots of premium theater seats, VIP boxes at sports authority games....it was an eye opener to me. The licensing authorities are more than glad to assist, but you have just got to get that inside track.
