SS isn't just for the elderly, it also helps widows, widowers and children I believe. I think it's sub $1K/month on average anyway and that's not really much subsistence even if you own your own home.

The reality is the US is an incredibly wealthy country but the gap between rich and poor (started under Reagan and increased even under Clinton) is the widest its been since the 1920s and we know what happened after that roaring decade. That kind of skewed resource distribution leads to revolution time and again. It's destabilizing and morally and ethically wrong.

Warren Buffet takes this position as does Bill Gates Sr. It takes a village to make a millionaire and the rewards for a tiny minority are way outsized under our current economic system. Now Bush is thinking about a flat tax (Iraq is a test case for this now) which is incredibly regressive or a consumption tax which is even more regressive.

This will only exacerbate the gap, further destabilize the country and lead to misery. Do we not remember Russia under the Czar or France under aristocracy? We seem to make the same stupid mistakes time and again.

Life in these United States should be much better for all who are privileged to live here. Instead, it's a fight for survival in the richest country in history.
