The Democrats share some of the blame for our internationalist posture. But I think Bush and the current Republicans have take it to a whole other level of blantant international militarism and domestic neglect. FDR, Truman, JFK, and LBJ all had robust domestic programs along with their internationalist doctrines. Bush, for the most part neglects domestic matters and focuses externally to an extreme degree. $130 Billion is a lot of dough (soon to be plus $70 Billion). That's our taxmonies, and they should be spent here at home to improve our country.
I'll tell you what is an excellent example of our tendacy to focus internationally and neglect domestic issues. The 2nd Avenue subway in NYC has been on the drawing boards for seven decades. Since then, we've had WW2, Korea, Cold War, Viet Nam, Gulf War, Balkans, Attack on Iraq, and multiple minor conflicts. I agree both Ds and Rs are responsible for this neglect. But, I'd think with the Cold War finally over, we could build some of these long neglected, but necessary projects. I don't hold any hope that we'll see real progress under a second Bush regime.
I just think it's kind of crazy. It's like someone taking part of your paycheck every month and telling you that you can't spend it to add to your house, and the money will be spent on someone else's house 10,000 miles away. How many people would agree with that sort of plan? Not many, but that's exactly what our government does with our taxdollars every year. |
