That map doesn't show that city peope "vote overwhelmingly democratic." Rather, it shows that an overwhelming majority of cities vote majority democratic. Big difference.

I am confused, as I don't perceive the difference. Perhaps you would try again and explain?

And also, what is it about being "cosmopolitan" that would make one prefer a democratic administration to a republican one?
