Reflecting on the election and indications that Bush was the overwhelming favorite among the Christian fundamentalists and evangelicals made me wonder why that was. Kerry may be a number of things but he is certainly not the reincarnation of the devil... and Bush doesn't speak in tongues. And something like 95% of Republicans voted Bush while a similar percentage nationwide Democrats voted Kerry. Why was neither candidate able to muster much support beyond their "bases".

My opinion? Neither tried. From the many campaign events that were "ticket only" to attack ads designed more to keep the faithful in line than swing voters over, neither side did much to enlarge their bases.

My gut feeling is that the next Democratic nominee has to stop conceding any one group to the republicans. Republicans don't have a monopoly on morals or values.

Democrats need to get down into the trenches and challenge the fundamentalist's on their home field. The essence of God's commandments is the instruction: "Love one another. Not "Love one another - except the gays."

Christian fundamentalists seem to place value on caring for the sick and will hold bake sales to help a cancer victim - but won't vote for a candidate that proposes health insurance for every American.

There are many other examples of how the Christian concept of "values" and "absolutes" doesn't always square with reality, and rather than challenge them on that Kerry simply ceded the entire bloc of fundamentalist voters to Bush.

There's no saying that any approach would convince a group that votes more on faith, dogma and hot button issues than cold logic, but what's to lose? Bush had 95% or so of the fundamentalist vote anyway. If a more activist approach could sway 20%, that would break the bloc and may be worth the effort in 08...
