Thanks Triffin.......this was fun ;)

I did a rough count of counties that voted the dem candidate comparing the 2004 election vs the 2000 election. It is nearly impossible for me to know whether island counties are incorporated into mainland counties or separate in states like Maine, Mass (not that it matters), and Washington state without doing more research (which I'm not willing to do.)

Bush had a net gain of 87 counties in this past election......but as I said, this is a rough calculation, although closer to fact than not. I can only assume that my eyes are more attuned to the color blue, and that what I was seeing was an optical illusion? Either that or democrats are clustering (which I saw allot of on the election atlas) in areas that trend more liberal.

PS. The state of Virginia has the smallest counties I've ever seen.

Note: Dave Leip's Atlas of U.S. Presidential Elections used the color red to designate Gore (2000) and Kerry (2004) counties.
