You don't understand. A nuclear armed Iran can obviously use a nuclear shield to deter nuclear attacks. This is obvious.

I'm afraid you do not understand. I suggested indeed that Iran could use nuclear capability as a deterrent, however first and foremost I believe that is a deterrent against conventional attacks.

Simple question: would the US have attacked Iraq had it already in place a functioning nuclear weapons system and delivery capability?

I doubt it very much.

I'll give you a hint as to where I am leading up to - by working against any reasonable interpretation of international law, Bush's actions have all but guaranteed that nation-states will seek to nuclear-arm themselves.

Particularly those in regions of dispute, and especially those who control or are next to states which control significant energy supplies.

Even Saddam seemed to have his wits about him; I'll give Iran's leaders the benefit of doubt and assume they are smart enough to realize they can't count on international law to protect themselves.

If you already know the law isn't there to serve you, yet you fear being hunted down, what do you do? Arm yourself and get defensive, at the very least.

Its my contention that Bush's (and Wolfy etc) doctrine has encouraged threatened nation-states to accelerate their weapons development programs and frankly I do not blame them one bit. Rather than make the world, or even the US, safer, this new approach (which is just a reworked old approach) has done quite the contrary.
