Sandintoes, many people traveled from the United States to Europe and obtained thalidomide in their travels. This is not to say these travelers sought the drug; merely to say it was given to them. It was a different time. Tranquilizers were thought to be good and safe and not addictive and were all the rage, and there was no real awareness of the effect of various drugs in early pregnancy. Many of these thalidomide babies were born to United States citizens.

Quaalude, et al, was once advertised as such in their medical mainstream heyday. Things change. - Holly

<edit> I just read your post to Country Bob. Many of these people had quite severe and sometimes multiple deformities and disabilities. As toddlers and beyond, many suffered terrible cruelty at the hands of their playmates.
