I think the way to go in medicine is to find causes of various ailments, and working on preventing the diseases. Adult onset diabetes is a preventable disease, alzheimers is a disease for which a cause has not been discovered.

So if it was up to me, I would put more of the government money in diabetes prevention (/awareness), and in more research into alzheimers, as opposed to "treating" symptoms, which is what most of the drugs do.

If I were to put additional government money into the system, I would definitely be more for something that will have long term investment for benefit for all people rather than short term spending (which is what happened recently with the new prescription drug subsidy).
