I think you have to keep in mind characteristics of Middle Eastern Islamic countries in your assessment of Islam.

The ME countries
- have little separation of Church and State, so state actions (which are often violent in the region) are often expressed in terms of religion
- have a low level of education (which tends to breed intolerance)
- have limited freedoms (which also tends to breed intolerance)
- have limited opportunity for individual advancement based solely on merit due to corruption and nepotism (which tends to breed social inertia and prevent development)

and the clincher is the oil sheikdoms have certain individuals which are direct products of the above four characteristics, also having immense, immense wealth, and the the subsequent power that comes with it.

When you combine low education, religious idealism, instable regional politics and immensely powerful, wealthy uneducated men, it sounds like a breeding ground for extremism. I would look to that framework as the source of the negative view you have of Islam, not necessarily the religion itself. Muslims in Indonesia or the US are not blowing up 7-11s because they think it is their religious duty.

I'm no expert on Islam, but I would imagine one can easily cut and paste select portions from the bible and convince yourself Christianity is all about war.
