Are you just defending the word "marriage" here ? If we pick another word called "xyz" and give exactly same priviledges like tax break, insurance coverage to "xyz" as "marriage", is that alright with you ? What specifically are the gays/lesbians destroying, that is not already broken in a marriage with 50% divorce rate ?
It's more than a word. Marriage for all of us "reds" is something provided by God for a man and a woman. Most couple's vows include God as a central theme. They are pledging themselves to each other before GOD.
Marriage is between two people. People defined what those two people are to be. Don't blame it on God.
Besides, at one time, people were saying that God supported the idea of slavery; others that it was God's wish for women not to vote. Times change........we become more sophisticated and open, and suddenly, it doesn't seem like God would think a particular way.
Two gay guys can shack up, and I'm fine with giving them the same benefits (if you must), but they can never be married. It's not possible, and it would further erode the institution.
What the hell does erode mean? Fifty percent of American marriages end in divorce. That's erosion.
Beach Bum tried to explain to you how the rest of us think. We don't see things like you do.....we are nearly as different as night and day. What rocks your world means little to us.
But its even more basic than that.....this country has been going haywire for at least two decades. Obesity is out of control.......American based airlines claim that nearly have their passengers are overweight and they've had to compensate by changing things in their planes to lighter materials. BTW the South has some of the worst statistics in the nation when it comes to obesity and smoking.
We consume 25% of the world's resources and yet we are less than 5% of the world's population. We have been told over and over that we are too dependent on foreign oil and yet we don't take clear permanent steps to end that dependency.
Asthma, diabetes and obesity have become epidemic among our children........their diets consist almost exclusively of starch. And its not just regular diabetes......kids are getting adult onset diabetes as well. ADHD has become chronic among kids.....almost a third of the boys are diagnosed. As additional evidence, latest testing that boys are falling behind girls in their academic performance.
For all our efforts, our natural environment is continuing to deteriorate at a fast clip. Increasingly, species of frogs are mutating rapidly, suggesting that environmental degradation is the culprit.
There are many more signs that our culture is sick and getting sicker. Instead of focusing on the real problems, Republicans attack minorities who are least able to fight back. I find it disgusting and hypocritical.........and a very big waste of time.
