Squetch, >>relating to EST<< There are the usual concerns relative to first discovery of a full gene and its function, that are typical of the i.p. battles that go on in biopharma all the time. With the position that EST's are patentable comes a whole new game, fish out all the gene fragments you can, and patent them: an EST minefield. Now you and everyone else who's patented chunks of the same gene can sue anyone who actually tries to understand and use the whole gene. It really decreases the odds of owning an undisputed gene.
