Well, here's the upside of having a literalist religion that hasn't adapted to the modern world - by Sharia, Arafat is not dead as long as he's breathing, it doesn't matter if he's brain dead and on a respirator or not.

It would be a legitimate way to buy some time to plan the funeral if the Palestinian officials had their act together, which of course they do not. The Israeli papers note that when King Hussein was flown from the Mayo Clinic back to Amman, he was also brain dead and on a respirator.
