Mindmeld,
"God was exceedingly specific about homosexuals. He called it an abomination. There are some core Christian beliefs that are not changeable, such as the ten commandments. It's not really a matter for debate. If you are Christian, there is no debate. It's wrong and that's that. If you are not a Christian, I imagine all sorts of things are permissable, including sex with a goat if that's what turns you on."

Didn't the same god say that interracial marriage corrupts institution of marriage or was it interpreted as such ? Did it corrupt the institution of marriage ?

There are lot of problems, if we base what is good for us humans today, based on what god said years ago.
1. First of all, who knows what god said. A lot of it an interpretation of what god said and years ago we justified slavery, banning interracial marriage and not allowing women to vote. That changed. Simply we interpret, what god said differently.
2. What is the context of what god said then ? Is it applicable in todays context? It seems like all ancient religion, seem to have treated women as second class humans. (BTW, why is god a 'he'). Clearly, I cant help question god as being fair (in todays context).
3. You start basing your laws on what the core christian belief (or any religion for that matter), and you end up doing what our founding fathers did not want us to do.

When one brings god in the discussion to justify our laws and policy, what I hear is "OK, shut down your reasoning and thinking. Blindly follow the lord and 'he' will take care of you". Many of us honestly cant do that, especially when we see attrocities and injustice done in the name of same god.

"Again, I say that Christian values can heal what's wrong with this country, but it doesn't have to be an extreme lurch to the right, rather it can be a gentle nudge from parents to their children."

I think most religious values and many other non-religious values can heal whats wrong with humanity, as long its done with a combination of wisdom and faith. Religion is great (but not the only way) when you need inner strength and can use it as a guide in times of great turmoil in our lives. But, once we get past that, we have to stop making our laws and policy, in the name of god.

I still haven't heard a logical explanation of how 2 loving and caring guy/lesbian, who want to get married corrupts an institution of marriage, where 50% end up in divorce.

I think the changes in the past century (womens rights, liberism, end of slavery, etc) are too much to absorb for religious right and the pendulum has swung back in their favor. Once it is absorbed, we will be ready to move forward. Just like we look back at a sense of disbelief at how we treated the slaves, women and interracial marriages, we'll look back at the days of (lack of) guy/lesbian rights, (lack of) right to choose, (lack of) stem cell research and women inequality with a sense of disbelief in few decades. I think its just a matter of time.

JMHO (-:

Bum.
