"As to the low percentage of foreign fighters involved in the Iraqi insurgency, I'm surprised that you need to ask for sources to buttress that statement."
Hi Ed,
This is a question that I've tried to follow carefully.
The cite that you give is an Australian newspaper back in June 2004. In that Australian account, General Casey is quoted as saying both that the percentage of foreigners is "relatively low" and that the "majority" of opponents are former supporters of Saddam.
These terms, at best, are imprecise. Do you have anything more specific?
I never did doubt that the majority of our opponents were Iraqi. I did, and do, doubt that the majority of our EFFECTIVE opponents are Iraqi. Specifically in Sunni areas such as Fallujah.
Either way, effective or not, I'd like to have some quantitative data on the number - or percentage - of foreign jihadists. I've looked for same, but have seen nothing.
If you have anything specific, I'd seriously appreciate it.
TIA,
