I can tell you exactly what Mexican immigrants want. Whether the American people want to give it to them is another story entirely.

They want to be able to go back and forth from the US to Mexico in freedom, to be able to work in the US, and go home to their families in Mexico when they are not working.

Closing off the borders forces them to make a choice -- stay home in Mexico with no work, or stay in the US without their families. Typically they choose to stay. Which has the unintended consequence of increasing the illegal Mexican immigrant population in the US.

I think our current policy is schizophrenic and irrational. We certainly need aliens in the work force.

Last week at a reception I spoke at length with a man who is in charge of food services at a resort. He told me that his work force is almost entirely Mexican, as are the groundskeepers. Americans don't want to do the work.

But at the same time, illegals cause terrible problems. The WashPost just ran a story about how the vast majority of outstanding felony warrants in the area are for illegals. I've worked on many, many cases where an illegal has committed a crime and then vanished.

A guest worker program would solve the problems of aliens using social services illegally, and the inability to keep track of aliens. Give them an ID, keep track of them, and if they don't have an ID, throw the book at them and their enablers.
