Ed, regarding silver linings, I suspect this could be a topic for disagreement even 20 years from now. Let's take the Viet Nam war. Certainly a lot of debate and energy went into that. One viewpoint says it was a waste of human life. Another viewpoint is it was the high water mark of the communist cantagion and while it directed American energies there, it also directed Chinese energies there also instead of other places like Thailand.

If Al Qaida wasn't preoccupied with fighting our troops in Iraq, would they not be occupied with bombing discos in Berlin, trains in Spain or perhaps American targets?

I'm not sold on the whole thing, by the way, because history is still being written, but I do understand the goals of this president. History will be written on whether it will be accomplished and that's not yet certain.
