Dude,

Did you read any Plutarch? Rome was a Republic, established by yes, the priviledged class, free Romans. Look, the system back then could not support giving the commoner a vote in government. The free Romans, especially Plutarch, knew that their Republic was based on a balance of power (military & wealth, i.e.spoils of war). That's why Crossing the Rubicon was the fateful step that toppled their Republic.
