I'm surprised you would conclude these guys are by nature self-indulgent. I haven't read Bloom, but I've read quite a bit of Barzun. He strikes me as a sober reflective man. And we should remember that Einstein suggested we should keep a child-like sense of wonderment when looking at the world. Not sure how wise it is to remain child-like, but I sure wouldn't want to lose that sense of wonder...
