Japan Oct economy watchers´ diffusion index falls for third straight month Tuesday, November 9, 2004 5:41:28 AM afxpress.com Japan Oct economy watchers' diffusion index falls for third straight month TOKYO (AFX) - Japan's economy watchers' index, which reflects the perceptions of workers with jobs sensitive to economic trends, fell in October for the third straight month, the Cabinet Office reported. The diffusion index declined 0.9 points from a month earlier to 46.4 for October, the Cabinet Office said That was the third consecutive month the index has remained below the critical 50-point line. The index gauges whether respondents -- taxi and truck drivers, department store sales staff, and restaurant and shop owners -- believe economic conditions have improved or worsened from three months earlier. A reading below 50 shows that a majority of respondents believe conditions are deteriorating The Cabinet Office attributed the drop in October in part to the two typhoons that lashed Japan during the month, depressing consumer spending. It also said corporate activity was depressed by the rise in raw material prices.
