Government Influence Fading in China Broadband

Online staff -- Electronic News, 11/9/2004

While still strong, China's central government's grip is beginning to loosen on the broadband market, ABI Research reported today.

According to ABI Research analyst Junmei He, technological maturity and a large subscriber pool have prepared China for a broadband revolution, but its progress is impeded by government regulations.

"In China fixed-line operators are also the largest broadband operators," He said in a statement. "As wireless communication replaces fixed-line communication as be the largest voice traffic carrier in China, value added services over broadband have been especially important to telecom operators as new profit drivers."

The Chinese are familiar with value-added services such as video conferencing, video-on-demand and broadband telephony, but some parts of the business are still waiting for government permission to move ahead, ABI noted.

But the government's influence is gradually fading. "Both telecom operators and service providers are trying to dodge government regulations," she says, "and work around the edges of the regulatory impediments," He said.
