EPA to overhaul water rules for airlines in two years By Stephanie I. Cohen
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- The Environmental Protection Agency announced Tuesday that it has undertaken a two-year process to overhaul water regulations on airplanes. EPA said it plans to test water supplies on 169 airplanes at 14 airports in addition to the 158 airplanes tested earlier this year. The agency said it has entered into consent agreements with 12 commercial airlines to begin to immediately conduct regular tests of aircraft water for bacteria. Delta Air Lines (DAL: news, chart, profile) and Southwest Airlines (LUV: news, chart, profile) are not party to the agreement. Delta has already begun to take additional steps to address the issue and Southwest, which only flies domestically, does not have the same contamination concerns as international carriers, EPA officials said.
