I don't think I could afford to opt out, considering that over the next 20 years they are planning on extracting about $350,000 from me and my wife in today's dollars.

By the time the under 55 set figures out what hit them, it will be too late. I'm sure there will be more analysts whose jobs will be threatened in order to coerce favorable projections to lure people in.

Whatever the plan, I believe the Treasury will reserve the right to borrow the "savings" so long as they make a paper credit that replaces the would-be-interest. I don't think for a second that they won't continue spending all the SS monies.
