I originally came from Beijing. As long as CSB does not push for de facto independent, I don't think China will use force, at least will not before 2008.

What China is doing now is to amend its constitution, and make it legal (for China) to include Taiwan as a province. And then China may set up a deadline (personally, I think no later than 2015-2020) to peacefully solve the Taiwan issue. And if after the deadline, still nothing happens, then anything possible. Actually, by that time, China will be no need for using force. Just by some economic embargo or things like that, Taiwan would have a very hard time.

But if CSB really acts like a man (keep his words) and practice his independent agenda, then all bets are off. Anything will be possible then.

As for Taiwan's economic power: as an entity, I think CSB will, if not already, bankrupt it. How much they spent a couple of days ago (something like US$6 billion?) just to buy a small tiny island for so-called diplomatic relationship? That is really pathetic. And not to mention those hundreds of billions of dollars spent on arm purchase from the US. How much money Taiwan has can sustain this kind of squandering?

My aunt was from Taiwan too, and now lives in LA. And I have 5 cousins (my aunt's sons) also live here in the US. She is my father’s younger sister, and went to Taiwan in 1949 with her husband (my uncle) who was in Guomindang’s airforce then. I am on a very good term with all my cousins, and my aunt. Well, I guess maybe because they are “WaiShengRen”<g>
