TOKYO (AFX) - Domestic shipments of personal computers in terms of value fell 0.2 pct from a year earlier to 838 bln yen in the first half to September, reflecting the decline in unit prices, according to MM Research Institute Ltd, an independent analysis and consultancy firm

By volume, however, shipments for the first half rose 4.0 pct year-on-year to 5.79 mln units in the first half, as brisk demand from the public sector offset a slump in private demand, it said

By manufacturers, NEC remained the top personal computer maker in Japan, controlling 22.5 pct of total shipments by volume, followed by Fujitsu Ltd with a 20.6 pct share

Dell climbed to third place from fourth the previous year, taking 11.4 pct, and Toshiba rose to fourth from fifth a year earlier, with 8.9 pct share

Sony fell to fifth with 7.7 pct share from third last year with 9.9 pct

The institute said it expects Japan's PC shipments to rise 5 pct by volume to 12.85 mln units in the current year to March 2005

"The replacement demand from companies is the key in the growth of PC shipments, as the demand from the public sector appears to be settling down in the second half," it said
