Funny - I thought this was just another article on domestic "feel good" bleeding heart and artist policies until I happened to look at the by-line again. Well, if it wasn't here, I guess it's only natural that it would be in France.

Rescuing children from heavy schoolbags

PARIS (Reuter) - France has come to the rescue of its overburdened young scholars, urging junior high schools to lighten the school bags children must carry on their backs each day.

The enormous school bags strapped to the backs of even the tiniest pupils are regularly denounced by doctors as a national health hazard.

"As school resumes, I wish to draw your attention to a few simple steps that could improve students' daily lives, particularly the youngest, with respect to a particularly worrisome subject -- the excessive weight of school bags," junior education minister Segolene Royal wrote in a letter to principals this week.

Among her recommendations were provision of lockers, authorization of smaller writing pads and allowing students to share books in class.

Medical experts say many young people suffer backache and occasionally damage to their spines. They advise students to carry no more than 10 percent of their total weight on their backs.

Poor little tykes. Where were these do-gooders when I needed them? <g>

Reminds me of some poetry I learned sometime in my school days....

The French, the French,
They're a funny race,
They fight with their feet,
and f_ _ _ with their face.

I forgot who our resident defender of the French is. Whoever you are - NO OFFENSE INTENDED!
