Bush names White House counsel to succeed Ashcroft

WASHINGTON Sources close to the White House say President Bush has chosen White House counsel Alberto Gonzales to succeed Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Gonzales is a Texas confidant of Bush, and their careers have been linked for at least a decade. He served as Bush's general counsel when Bush was Texas governor, then served as Texas secretary of state and a Texas Supreme Court justice.
