This may be a stupid question, but is it possible to get oil out of volcanic rock? This occurred to me while I was reviewing some info on STP and realized for the first time that these are volcanic islands. It's been a few years since my intro geology class, but I was under the impression oil is only found in sedimentary formations.

If this is the case, they would not be able to get oil from on-land wells on STP. The only place they could drill is offshore, where they can get to sedimentary rock, presumably part of the continental shelf. I guess they could drill all the way through the volcanic mountain until they get to the level where the underlying piece of continental shelf sits, but as far as they are from the mainland, that might be thousands of feet (I haven't been able to find out how deep the water around STP is, and hence how far down the continental stuff is). Seems like it would be much more feasible just to drill offshore.

If somebody is knowledgeable about this kind of stuff, please educate me.

thanks,
Mike
