The bottom line, analysts said, is that IBM is on the hunt. However, the transactions won't come as fast as the rumor mill indicates, nor will there be as many, they said.

``IBM has said they are in an acquisition mode,'' said Stephen Dube, an analyst at Wasserstein Perella Securities. ``You have to assume they are on the prowl for software.''
