How can we know that?

I should have clarified - the sentence had two parts, a statement of fact, "the doctors said Arafat had a high white blood cell count," and my own conclusion, "which rules out AIDS."

How can we know that Arafat had a high white blood cell count? I suppose we can't. It could be a mistake, it could be a lie.

BUT if he did have a high white blood cell count, that would rule out AIDS, which causes (among other things) a low white blood cell count.
