"If Israel does not have the right to exist, does the United States?"
That's a really good question. I am an American by birth, but definitely not a cheerleader for America. If you look at American history, Europeans settled here, slaughtered the rightful residents, enslaved African blacks, and did a whole bunch of stuff over several hundred years that I believe has affected our, um, karma incredibly.
I think what bothers me most is that the U.S.Army drove herds of buffalo over cliffs so the Indian tribes would starve to death. But that is just one of thousands of things that personally offend me.
I suppose since the immigrants have now been here so long, it is unrealistic to think we will all get up and leave. The best compromise I have been able to come up with is that history textbooks, beginning in elementary school, should actually teach the real history of the European conquest of the Americas. When I was a girl, many moons ago, history was basically the glorification of manifest destiny and a lot of lying. It was not until college that any historically accurate history was taught at all (by marxist professors, of course).
Then I think we should somehow compensate all the descendants of former slaves and Native Americans without simply giving them cash which, unfortunately, often goes just to kill their multi-generational pain. |
