I've met many people people who worship the rules and they often ignore the logic which underlies those same rules.

It is a lot easier to fallow procedure than to think. In Zen Buddhism there is a saying, "The master points at the moon. The novice sees the finger pointing and the wise looks at the moon". This is why both Zen and Tantra emphasize one-on-one communication between the master and the pupil. The job of the master is not to "teach" the way but to create personalized obstacles such that solving them will lead the student towards enlightenment. There is an ethereal quality to enlightenment that cannot be realized by just reading books or taking courses.
