OIS could show government and industry how to cooperate
On behalf of OIS Optical Imaging Systems Inc. and its employees, I wish to thank you and the staff of EE Times for the opportunity to have OIS' views published.
In 1993, OIS won a competitive award from Darpa to build and operate a state-of-the-art AM-LCD manufacturing facility. Each party was to contribute equal shares of capital. The plant was built in Northville, Mich., and is now in full production. We are currently producing approximately 400 displays (17 types) per month. We have U.S. government subcontracts for the following aircraft: F-22, F-16, F-18, F-15, C-141 and Apache helicopter. In the commercial market, we are also delivering displays for commercial aircraft and X-ray detector sensors for medical diagnostics. We have not defaulted on any U.S. government or commercial sub or prime contracts. More importantly, the unfounded rumors concerning OIS production capabilities must be dispelled. OIS is performing on all its contracts/subcontracts and is increasing its capabilities on a daily basis. The progress that we have made in bringing a new factory online is in our view quite remarkable, and equal to, if not better than, the others in the industry.
Moreover, our success is such that we now have excess capacity which we are working to fill. OIS is not experiencing production difficulties, nor was the government's investment ill-advised. It is, from our perspective, a model of what government and industry can accomplish when vision and ingenuity are combined.
