Gee, you are awfully cheerful about horrible incidents in history. Although I don't actually understand when you are being serious or not. I threw that bit in about the Marxist professors because I was being ironic, incidentally. The right blames most of what is wrong everywhere on Marxist professors, or at least they used to before Osama Bin Laden gave them a new, bigger someone to blame for whatever is wrong.
The different, um, migrations in western Europe mostly happened so long ago that everyone has interbred with gusto. Dublin, Ireland is chock full of Irish people with Viking features because of intermarriage, and no one seems that angry anymore.
The difference with the Indians is that they mostly perished, and the survivors are still less than second-class Americans, reeling with the effects of our violation of them. The past is not dead for them, or for us looking at them, if we have a shred of common decency. Of course, I do not really expect the right to have common decency, so I am not sure why I am still so disappointed.
It is true that American elementary school textbooks in the past mentioned the Indians, the slaves, etc. Not mentioning them would have been impossible. But they managed to twist the whole thing so the Indians were savages preying on the wonderful white settlers, who came to give American dignity and purpose and a future filled with technological advances. |
