WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (AP) - Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of the former Democratic vice-presidential candidate John Edwards, thanked supporters on Thursday for their thoughts and prayers as she began chemotherapy for breast cancer.
"Your strength is carrying my family through, too, in this latest struggle," she wrote in an e-mail message. A biopsy showed that a half-dollar-size lump in her breast had not spread, a family spokesman said.
After a 16-week chemotherapy course, Mrs. Edwards, 55, will take a four- to six-week break. Doctors at Georgetown University Hospital who are treating her will then surgically remove the lump.
A needle biopsy of Mrs. Edwards's lymph nodes on Tuesday found "no indication of cancer," the spokesman, David Ginsberg, said. As a safety precaution, however, doctors will remove some of her healthy lymph node tissue.
