SHe is being treated rather aggressively. Her tumor is also quite large. Tumors over 2 centimeters tend to ( but not always) be present with some tumor cells in the lymph nodes. The cancer may not be growing in the nodes but can be present microscopically........which is not good. It would take more than a needle biopsy to give 100% reliability.

Cancer in the breast won't kill you...........if it spreads out of the breast and into other vital organs it can kill you.

SHe is being treated as if her doctors assume she has stage 4 breast cancer...........that is the chemotherapy which treats cancer cells that could be anywhere in the body . For her to receive that treatment first, it is as if the DR's feel an urgent need to arrest cancer growth outside the breast. Otherwise, they would take out the lump first and remove some lymph nodes and examine them microscopically with a "fine tooth comb". Radiation treatment can be used instead of mastectomy in early diagnosed cases. Some women elect to have chemo even if the lymph nodes are negative. Research shows that chemo helps prevent reoccurrence even if the nodes are clean.

Her Dr's are starting out treating her VERY aggressively.

LEt's hope the info in the Times was wrong!!! IT could very possibly have been reported incorrectly. I sure hope so.
