Yesterday, the agency official who oversees foreign operations, Deputy Director of Operations Stephen R. Kappes, tendered his resignation after a confrontation with Murray. Goss and the White House pleaded with Kappes to reconsider and he agreed to delay his decision until Monday, the officials said.

I don't believe the white house part.

The biggest mistake folks in a large org make is to believe their resignation will leave an unfillable hole. For some the ultimate ego trip is to resign over a dispute. Those folks fade into unknown obscurity as fast as they empty their desk.

A little shake-up, if accompanied by introspection, never hurt a large org.

Lots of experienced folks will be happy to fill the holes and accept the pay raise.
