I love rituals. I think they are extremely important for families and communities. Being raised in the pre-Vatican II Catholic Church, my childhood revolved around ritual, and it is actually very comforting. Maybe that is why I retain affection for the traditional.

But their purpose is to bring together and bond a group and so anything that is divisive by its nature makes a lousy bonding agent, imo.

But we ARE in the Bible belt here.

A friend of mine who sings in the Dallas Opera Chorus tells of how this most elegant diva-- someone like Scotto or Sutherland-- performed the traditional opera ritual just before she went onstage (you say "toy, toy, toy", and spit) and much to my friend's somewhat horrified amazement, let loose a real loogie.

I know this has nothing to do with religion, but I love the story.
