I found another article about Mrs. Edwards and her
fight with cancer.

HealthWatch: Aggressive Treatment for Elizabeth Edwards

Yahoo News

Elizabeth Edwards has revealed her plans for treating her breast cancer.

The wife of the former vice-presidential candidate Sen. John Edwards has chosen a treatment plan that appears quite aggressive. She'll have a 16-week course of chemotherapy before getting surgery to remove a half-dollar-sized lump in her breast. Dr. Laura Esserman, a breast cancer surgeon at UCSF, says getting chemo first has benefits.

"What we've discovered is that something really so simple can help us so much. That's just changing the order of the therapy," Esserman said. "If you know you're going to need systemic chemotherapy or hormone therapy, start with it first. Then do the surgery."

A needle biopsy of a lymph node found no evidence the cancer has spread in her body. After surgery, Mrs. Edwards will also undergo radiation.

I spoke with some breast cancer experts Thursday, and they all say chemotherapy before surgery is typically given only in a few circumstances, such as when a cancer is aggressive and growing fast, or if the cancer is big. We don't know how Mrs. Edwards' cancer fits into this.
